EMDR Intensives
Our Approach
An intensive EMDR session is a way to deliver treatment in a short period of time, where multiple EMDR sessions are completed per day. Research shows that intensive therapy for trauma and stress can be extremely effective on symptom reduction.
According to new research, clients completing intensive treatment can make as much progress in the shorter format as in standard ongoing weekly sessions. This can eliminate weeks or months of living with trauma symptoms, and with the toll this takes on one’s life.
How does it work?
EMDR Intensive Programs consist of 3 parts:
- The intake appointment
- The intensive EMDR sessions
- The follow up appointment
How long are intensive EMDR sessions?
Intensive EMDR sessions are typically 3 hours long.
How many intensive EMDR sessions do I need?
Typically, we can address one primary event within 2-4 EMDR intensive sessions.
Depending on how your brain responds to EMDR and how many topics you want to address, the total number of intensive EMDR sessions will vary for each person.
What types of experiences can we address during EMDR intensive sessions?
Intensive EMDR work may be a good match for addressing:
- Single incident traumatic events
- Early childhood and pre-verbal trauma
- As an adjunct to talk therapy to focus on specific trauma
- Trauma that happened very recently
- PTSD
- Intergenerational, or cultural based trauma
Is it more expensive?
While there is a larger upfront cost, the shorter duration of treatment over all can save money as it greatly reduces lost work time and can make child care easier than weekly sessions.
Clients who are out of town or out of state can take advantage of access to excellent treatment quickly, making only one trip to California.
Local clients who have transportation issues or childcare complications can also usually make arrangements for the shorter time frame more easily than for ongoing therapy.
Is it right for me?
People who tend to respond well to intensive EMDR therapy:
- Have an understanding of the issue they want to address
- Have awareness of their emotions and body sensations when reflecting on traumatic
- Are ready to make major shifts and heal through a powerful and transformative experience
While many clients will benefit from intensive therapy, some may do better with an ongoing therapeutic relationship. These options will be discussed in your intake.
