Trauma Therapy
Trauma is a shock to our system. It disrupts our ability to trust, feel safe or connect with our sense of self.
In the aftermath of trauma feelings of fear, horror, anger, sadness, disgust or shame can be intense and overwhelming. Trying to avoid them can lead people to seek activities or addictions to numb or distract from these feelings, but the intensity commonly recurs in nightmares or flashbacks.
Types of trauma
Trauma is the dramatic response of our nervous system to an event or series of events perceived to be threatening to ourselves or others we care about that inhibits our emotions, our cognitive ability, our body or our spiritual core.
Trauma can be a single incident such as a sexual assault, a betrayal or a sudden loss or it can result from being a witness to violence. Prolonged experiences of threat such as childhood abuse or exposure to unhealthy emotional environments can also act as trauma on a person.
However trauma occurs, the impact of it can be crippling. The desire for isolation or feelings of shame that arise from traumatic experiences disrupt relationships at critical times. The instinct to retreat and self-protect in the face of adversity and loss is natural, but it further harms a person when connecting with others is essential to healing.
The results of traumatic experiences and memories can be difficult to untangle when complicated by other struggles. Anxiety, depression, co-dependence, mental or physical health issues can co-exist with trauma or even mask it. Healing can feel out of reach when so many issues need to be addressed.
But trauma can be treated. Releasing the power of deep traumatic memories affects the whole person and allows them to address other mental, physical or emotional health concerns.
