Anger Management
- Would you like to understand why you can’t control your anger?
- Have you had a recent conflict (“the last straw”) that made you realize that you need to fix the problem?
- Are you tired of anger damaging your relationships? Or, worried that it might?
Our Approach
Most anger management therapies help you identify triggers, guide your understanding of the source of your anger, and give you strategies to calm yourself in the moment. And while these are important pieces, they are not enough. Otherwise, people would decide to “just stop it” and that would work to solve their anger problem.
We all know what anger is, and we’ve all felt it, whether it was a fleeting annoyance or full-fledged rage. Most of the time our anger is manageable. But when it threatens to get out of control or turns destructive, it can lead to problems — at work, in our personal lives, and in the overall quality of our lives. It can make us feel as though we’re at the mercy of an unpredictable force that is controlling us.
How does it work?
With EMDR we can help you not only identify triggers and understand the source of your anger, but also shift how you respond to provoking situations.
The triggers that release the anger are often not about what is happening in the present, but instead they are activating old memories, ones that we’re not necessarily fully aware of. In a flash we are not responding to the current situation, but instead we are reacting as if we are emotionally unsafe, physically threatened or wherever it is our memories have taken us.
With EMDR we’ll find and target the events in which the emotionally volatile memories and negative beliefs about yourself were first laid down. We’ll then use EMDR processing to desensitize them so they don’t keep getting triggered, and we’ll shift them to positive beliefs.
